The Great War Has Ended!

Women Almost Have the Vote!

During this April's Talladega Pilgrimage Tour the Abernethy-Shaw House wants to invite you to an Edwardian Historical Experience during the 2025 Tour of Homes.

It's a pleasant Spring weekend in 1919 and the couple residing at 504 East Street South have weekend guests. Friends from Minnesota are visiting. Joan the retired dancer is introducing the group to a dance form she has been rigorously studying, the authentic Hula.  Her husband, a former baseball player is meeting with team owners and promoters across the South seeking to standardize the Rules of Baseball and make the National Sport more honest and above board.

They have been joined by Lenny Deluxe and his wife Anne just back from a tour of Norway. Together the couple has seen the world, Lenny from the view of the Vaudeville stage and Anne with from the perspective of a well-seasoned and savvy cross cultural traveler.

The Professor, David Steiling, co-owner of the house together with his wife, Sarah Warren, once trod the boards of vaudeville with Lenny when both were young and full of hot sauce. The Professor has since retired into the relative calm of academic life, but he seems to be spending a lot of time lately in his upstairs studio bedroom, experimenting with his old magical apparatus.

When you take the tour you are likely to hear Lenny DeLuxe, accordion virtuoso and vaudeville band leader, ensconced in the music room practicing songs for his latest review. Join them this one weekend in April when you can experience, if only for a brief time, the rampant optimism as an old age falls away and a new age begins.

Tickets for the entire Talladega Pilgrimage Tour of Homes are available here.  The Proceeds of the Tour benefit projects of historic importance and preservation in the City of Talladega, Alabama.

The Suffrage Button

Before you enter the house you will be offered your choice of three historic recreations of a button supporting women's suffrage in 1919.  Please take one and show your support for Votes for Women.

The year 1919 marked a pivotal moment in the long arc of women's suffrage in America, where decades of persistent activism finally began to bear fruit. The landscape was one of mounting momentum, as suffragists had successfully shifted public opinion through a combination of peaceful protests, persuasive arguments, and increasingly visible political pressure.
