Built in 1908
Built in 1908 and revised in 1912, The Abernethy-Shaw House represents
the Craftsman style's emphasis on natural materials, honest structural
elements, and harmonious integration with its surroundings. The combination of
stone and wood, along with the prominent porch and decorative structural
elements, makes this a quintessential example of American Craftsman
architecture.
The home’s most notable residents were Tom and Louise
Abernethy. Poet, writer, editor and co-owner of the local newspaper, Tom was the
candidate for governor for the Republican Party in 1954 and Louise Wallis
Abernethy was the Republican National Committeewoman from Alabama and a force
in Alabama politics for over 20 years. The Wallis and Abernethy families occupied the
house for most of the 20th century until Louise’s death in 1998.
Located at 504 East Street South, the house is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places and is part of the Silk Stocking
Historic District of Talladega, Al.
